Looking east: News from Acton / photos of the Credit River double tracking in progress

Interested in the perspective eastward from Waterloo Region and Guelph? Here are a couple perspectives worth looking at:

Acton’s take on new GO service: http://www.insidehalton.com/news/article/903306–go-trains-coming-to-acton-in-2011

Photo of the Credit River double tracking project, which was key to the possibility of expanded service Westward to our regions:

As a bit of a historian, I note that the bridge abutments were widended and constructed to match the existing abutments, which were constructed in the 19th century.

I am happy to see that the GO Train service will be extended to Kitchener, but I’m a little worried that there may be a repetition of the past. When the GO Train was extended to Guelph in 1990, it was also done on a shoestring budget and as a consequence did not attract the ridership required to support the service. The government in 1993 justified the cut of this service saying only 20 people regularly rode it daily from Guelph. A full upgrade of the line to allow more stations and higher speeds as defined in the environmental assessment is the best way to attract sustaining ridership. Until then, the Kitchener GO train may be at risk.

The news articles state that Kitchener to Union Station will take about 2 hours. For fun, let’s compare this with some old timetables:

1954 CN Schedule (With Steam Engines!)
Kitchener-Union (7 stops): 2 hr 10 min
Kitchener-Union (4 stops): 1 hr 40 min

1982 VIA Schedule (Diesels)
Kitchener-Union (4 stops): 1 hr 35 min to 1 hr 40 min

2010 VIA Schedule (Diesels)
Kitchener-Union (3 stops-morn rush hour): 1 hr 55 min Kitchener-Union (3 stops-rest of day): 1 hr 40 min

Food for thought!
