[Wellington] County wants GO and Via Rail to form ridership agreement

By shost at 9:06 pm on Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Members of the county’s roads committee voted Tuesday to have Warden Chris White send a letter to transport minister Kathleen Wynne. A draft letter attached to the agenda expresses concern with GO’s plan to launch service through Guelph later this year with just two trains during morning peak times.

Such service “may be insufficient to fully develop the market potential for commuter transit,” the letter reads.

The county proposes GO could enter an agreement with Via Rail which would allow GO customers access to Via’s trains “to ensure the successful launch of GO Rail services in 2011.””

Frankly, I don’t think GO should be providing train service beyond the greenbelt. If the province wants better connections between KW and Toronto, it should pay VIA instead.

There is currently a program in place with VIA rail called the GO VIA Pak. http://www.viarail.ca/en/fares/travel-passes/go-via-pak

Specifically designed for GO Transit monthly pass or 10-Ride Ticket holders, the GO VIA Pak lets you ride VIA Rail trains between the same stations covered by your GO Transit pass or tickets.

The current GO VIA Pak contains 10 coupons valid for 10 one-way trips between Toronto’s Union Station and a site with GO Station. The GO VIA Pak only costs people the difference between GO Transit and VIA Rail fares.

For example, VIA Rail’s Georgetown regular fare is $22.60 with tax while Guelph is $28.25. The Georgetown GO-VIA Pak price is $72.75 for 10 pack. A ten ride fare on GO to Georgetown is $78.75 and to Guelph is $108.25.

Basically all that is needed is to have VIA and GO extend this current offer across to Guelph and Kitchener. My only problem is the price probably will jump closer to $100 for a GO Via Pak and combined with a 10 ride, make is too expensive each week compared to Greyhound’s flat $330 with tax a month express bus between Guelph and Toronto.
