Has GO construction and parking affected VIA commuter trains?

By shost at 10:12 pm on Thursday, June 2, 2011

Observation: Since the Guelph VIA station is under construction for GO trains and the Carden St. Transit Terminal, and there is likely some construction in Kitchener, has this affected Trains 86/87 the current commuter option to Toronto? June 1 2011′s #87 only had four cars, where usually it’s five or six.. it would appear based on visual observations the number of riders could be down approx 20%!

Any commuters on VIA 86/87 care to elaborate or provide your own observations?

I stopped using VIA around the time that free parking options ceased. I suspect there are several other VIA commuters who live in S. Guelph that have opted to drive to Milton for the GO rather than to pay both for parking and the increased price of a VIA pass ($384 for 10 round trips) versus GO ($76 for 5 round trips).
While I applaud Guelph for once again implementing GO service in the area, I know of several individuals like myself that plan to continue to drive to Milton to take the GO rather than to drive north into downtown, pay an increased fare (over Milton), AND spend $70 per month to park. Guelph will eventually recognize that it is unrealistic and silly to attempt to make the Guelph GO station like Union Station (a no-free-parking transit hub).

*I apologize, that is $284, not $384.

Don’t forget driving to/from Milton costs you money…

Looking at Google maps, it seems there are plenty of parking spaces within 5-10 minutes walk of the station (e.g. Cork St E or Fountain & Wyndham). I don’t know how much they cost, but is it really so much more than the cost of driving?

Failing that, take the bus!

Here’s a list of parking lot rates, Monthly,

Range from $33 (would require 5-7 min walk to station) to $80

http://guelph.ca/uploads/PDF/Parking/Bylaw036363.pdf

It’s 26 KM from Clair/Gordon to the Milton GO station, that’s 50 KM round trip, which would cost me about $5 in gas alone. That’s $100 in gas.. and that’s in a 4 cylinder vehicle.

Parking is definately a bit cheaper in my case.
