The long awaited Toronto Airport rail link is now under construction, according to a Ontario Government media release:
(Guelph Connection – This connects to our Kitchener Georgetown line and we MAY get a more direct route to the Airport without having to go all the way to Union Station and back)
(Another Guelph connection – Some of the work is being done by a local Guelph contractor and materials for the project are being unloaded in Guelph)
For those that do not know, here are the point form summary of the rail link to date from the Ontario Government:
- More than five million people travel between downtown Toronto and Pearson International Airport and that number is expected to reach nine million by 2020.
- Metrolinx will build, own and operate the Air Rail Link. It has purchased 18 Diesel Multiple Units from Sumitomo Corporation of America — a critical step in ensuring the link is running in time for the Pan/Parapan Am Games in 2015. These diesel vehicles are the cleanest available and will be convertible to electric.
- When completed, travel time between Union Station and Pearson will be approximately 25 minutes. Trains are expected to depart Union Station and Toronto Pearson every 15 minutes and will make stops at Bloor and Weston GO Transit Stations.
