Improvements to Guelph commuter transit coming

By shost at 9:02 pm on Wednesday, April 25, 2007

As part of the reccomendations to improve the GO bus network (phase 1 of 2 of proposed improvement studies) additional service from the Univeristy of Guelph, to the Cooksville GO Station (Milton Line) will be added. This new service will run hourly via the new Park and Ride stations (adding to the use of the Cambridge improvements) via Square One. It is yet unknown if this will connect to Commuter train services on the Milton line, to allow alternate service to Toronto for Guelph residents. Guelph Transit is also provisioning new or additional service to U of G to connect to the new GO buses, which are expected to start by the fall of 2007.

Exact details and schedules of the above improvements are not yet known, and will probably be worked out by Summer.

As mentioned earlier, Phase 2 of the study is to reccomend rail improvements to the Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo region. The Guelph Tribune reports this study is not yet complete.

The Guelph newspapers also discussed provinces plan for transit needs over the next 25 years. While a new highway is mentioned (east to the 400), the article also states ”"A lot of people think we are a ministry of building highways,” he added. “Not necessarily. Times are changing and all kinds of options have to be considered.” ” (Guelph Mercury 4/24/2007)
