Where to buy tickets at Guelph or Kitchener stations?

By shost at 9:50 pm on Sunday, January 8, 2012

I have had a reader ask, and get a rather confusing answer, on where to buy tickets. You’d think you’d just buy them at respective stations, but can readers please comment on exactly where you can buy GO tickets?

You can buy GO tickets & passes in Guelph at the VIA Rail Booth OR at the temporary Guelph Bus Terminal at Wyndham Street at Fountain Street.

In Kitchener, you can also get passes and tickets at the VIA Rail booth at the train station. Hours at Guelph and Kitchener were extended to open earlier to accommodate GO rides. Visit the GO transit website as it lists the hours.

They are available at the University of Guelph during business hours, at the front of the University Centre.

The hours at the Guelph Central GO/Via Station have changed because of the GO train. Since the VIA attendant is now selling both the GO & VIA tickets, the hours are now:

From Monday to Friday the ticket counter is open from 05h45 to 12h45 and 18h00 to 22h15. On Saturday and Sunday, it is open 08h45 to 12h45 and 16h45 to 20h30. There is a late VIA train, passengers now must buy tickets in advance since the booth won’t be open for the last train. The station, however, will be open Monday to Friday from 05h45 to 12h45, 18h00 to 22h15 and for the last train 23h00 to 23h30. On Saturday and Sunday from 08h45 to 12h45, 16h45 to 20h30, 21h35 to 22h05 and from last train 23h00 to 23h30.

Another interesting tidbit of info I was able to get from the VIA attendant is what kinda numbers they are getting on the GO train. They did mention they bring in about $2000 a day. My rough estimate using the 10 ride ticket fare, you average about 185 people. I am not sure if that includes Kitchener or just Guelph.

They also mentioned that, with the Government tight on money, that the future expansion of GO service to this area is being carefully looked at based on the ridership numbers. They said ff the numbers don’t justify having 2 trains now, we could see a reduction in trains as the revenue now coming in isn’t doing it justice. I couldn’t get any info on the track projects mentioned in this blog.
