VIA Rail trains stop running on the North Mainline – why? ‘Technical review of rail infrastructure’

By shost at 9:03 am on Friday, August 9, 2013

For over a day now (24 hours) VIA Rail trains have been running from Oakville to London on the South Mainline – avoiding completely Brampton, Guelph, Kitchener, Stratford, etc. Why you ask? Good question.

Passengers from Brampton to St. marys are being put on a bus – while London and Sarnia passengers are kept on the train as their station stops are occurring largely as scheduled.

“Technical Review of Rail Infrastructure” is the official reason VIA is giving. One agent on the phone noted that the track is being fixed. But they fail to go into more detail. VIA – We expect more from you, and I’ll give everyone a hint:

A few days ago, the Track Evaluation Train (Canadian Pacific Railway) ran on the Goderich-Exeter detecting Defects on the line. A few days later, VIA decided to stop running. Clearly it found something major and VIA has decided to re-route trains until further notice. The problem is, this shant occur for more than a day without some kind of explanation as to what the problem is.

I believe GO trains and Freight are operating normally on the line east of Kitchener. This leads me to believe the problem is west of Kitchener, or that VIA is really in dispute with the operator and maintainer of the line, Goderich-Exeter Railway.

I thought maybe it was because of yesterdays derailment of the freight train and track work that had to happen as well overnight.

Where? Go derailed at Georgetown Thursday night, but was very minor and would only affect one train.
