VIA Rail: Details of VIA’s capital budget released

By shost at 1:32 pm on Thursday, July 31, 2008

According to the August 2008 edition of Branchline Magazine (published by the Bytown Railway Society) who has revealed details of the proposed VIA Rail capital expenditures, where most of the money appears to be earmarked for the Guelph subdivision. Some highlights:

  • Georgetown-Guelph-Kitchener-London (Guelph sub) will recieve centralized traffic control (CTC) doubling VIA’s capacity on the line. As well, money will be used to refurbish stations along the route. VIA expects to save 20 minutes of time off journeys on this route when completed.
  • Windsor-London (Chatham sub) — CTC in the VIA owned portion, which is currently dark (no signalling) and new welded rail on about 10 miles of track
  • Ottawa (Brockville and Smiths Falls subs) will go from dark territory to CTC, and will add more passing sidings.

The above improvements are designed to improve capacity, increase operational safety, improve on-time performance, reduce travel time, and improve the ride quality (with new rails).

More information to come..
